The New i-mate JasJar, an Innovative PDA

There's an exciting new device out there: the i-mate JasJar, billed as the "World's first Windows Mobile 5.0 3G enabled GSM/GPRS mini-laptop phone with Wi-Fi. That's a lot of adjectives for one little device, and an unusual name. It costs a lot more than the run of the mill PDA, in the $1200 range. It runs Windows Mobile 5.0 Phone Edition, and is about 3.2" X 5" X 1" and weighs about 10 ounces. The screen is 3.6" and is touch sensitive, though it also has a 62-key QWERTY keyboard. For more information go to: http://www.clubimate.com/t-DETAILS_JASJAR.aspx

Windows Mobile 5.0

As mentioned in the previous article, Windows Mobile 5.0 is available. It includes a newer version of ActiveSync, version. 3.8. It doesn't make for simple upgrades, because it handles memory in a different way than previous versions of Pocket PC software. Previously only the operating system, or in some cases some user data or programs, would be stored in the non-volatile ROM type memory. User data was in the volatile RAM type memory and therefore would disappear if the main and backup batteries were both depleted. PDAs running WM 5.0 will use RAM only for the applications that are currently running, while all user data will be placed into ROM, which they call "persistent memory." That's a great move for users who buy devices that were designed for that type of memory handling. But it's bad news for those of us who are running devices designed for earlier versions, because they may not have enough ROM to accommodate the new storage philosophy. Check for more information on Microsoft's WM 5.0 site: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.mspx.

Fossil's PDA Watch Software

Fossil has opened an online store to sell software for its PDA watches running the Palm OS. The software covers quite a range of categories, such as Business / Finance, Education, Utilities, Games, Medical.....  I'm having a hard time imagining running a financial program on a PDA with a screen the size of a postage stamp, but if it keeps your data strapped to your body so it's always handy, well maybe it makes sense. Any Palm OS 4.1 software should run on the tiny PDAs. Here's the link to the store: http://fossil.palmgear.com/.

Resco's File Explore Update

Resco recently announced the availability of the newest release of one of its best selling applications - Resco Explorer 2005. They found that the growth of external memory media capacity has made management of stored data an increasingly difficult task. The Pocket PCs standard File Explorer is not capable of handling all these tasks. From the company's web site: "Resco Explorer 2005 is: a powerful file management utility for your Pocket PC. It implements all standard features such as file/folder manipulation. Thus, you can copy, move or delete files, create folders, run programs with arguments, and search for files or folders." The program works with the File Manager, File Encryption, ZIP Compression, Network Browser, Registry Editor and Viewer modules. Version 5.21 sells for $24.95, runs on Pocket PC 2002 & 2003, and is available on a 14 day free trial. For more information, visit: http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/default.asp.
